Well I guess the term tank...actually comes from tanks (irl tanks...)...as well as warriors having high armor.
But "tank" is used in other ways...mostly just being able to withstand a lot of damage.

Because in other MMOs, warrior classes are, indeed, Tanks.
The thinking carries over without anyone actually trying otherwise (look at PuGs), silly people assume warriors are tanks, and... well...
Warriors end up as tanks despite being the scariest damage dealers in the game.
Just further proof that humanity, as a whole, is incredibly stupid.

Couldnt agree more...
They maybe refer to the fact that, when Guild Wars first came out, the only Melee profession was the Warrior. So maybe the minds didnt evolve after the other games came out and new melee professions appeared. Its like some sort of conditioned reflex...

Part of it comes from people comparing modern weaponry to medievil times.
Armored knights on horseback were the "tanks" of thier time.
Some of it also comes just from the look of the warrior. A war in Platemail or Templar certainly looks like a walking tank, the same is certainly not true for elite gladiator armor....

Because Warriors are good at tanking.
Mind you, tanking is a terrible strategy and Warriors are much better at killing stuff, but if for whatever reason you need a tanks, Warriors are the best profession for that.

"Tank" doesnt exactly mean "warrior" in my mind, but rather a "tank" is anything with lots of HP and armor, the intention with a tank is to get in the way and slow the enemy down with your defense. Lots of things can be tanks, but most in GW think of warrior when u say tank, just because they are arguably the best at it, or is arguably the best thing to do with a warrior. (but warrior is not the only class that can tank well)

Off topic but E/Me > W/x anyday for tanking.
And why is "tank" used in MMO's to refer to characters who soak up a lot of damage?
IRL Tanks are armored vehicles with 50cal machine guns and a main turret that can blow **** up. Yes they can resist small arms fire and stuff, but that's not their primary purpose...

Much simpler reason:
Warrior - 3 Syllables
Tank - 1 Syllable
People are lazy

Warrior has naturally high armor - they can hold aggro well without even using defensive skills as long as they're backed up a little by some kinda healer. Ele would just get spiked to death, unless they had a bunch of enchantments.....and without OF, you'll just get disenchanted.....if there's no disenchants around, chances are the area isn't even hard enough to require some kinda player to hold aggro.

no areag require one character to hold aggro. yes having enemies not get past the frontline is good, but tanking is just fail.
